Colorado’s hazardous waste regulations at 6 CCR 1007-3, sections 262.16(d) and 262.17(b), allow small quantity generators and large quantity generators of hazardous waste to request a 30-day accumulation time limit extension for hazardous waste stored on site longer than:
- 180 days (or 270 days if the waste must be transported a distance of 200 miles or more) for small quantity generators.
- 90 days for large quantity generators.
Attention: You must submit the application for extension before the initial 90-day/180-day accumulation time limit for your generator category expires. Additionally, you must submit any subsequent 30-day extension requests before the expiration of the previous extension.
The Hazardous Materials and Waste Management Division may grant a 30-day extension to qualifying generators that expect to exceed their time limits due to unforeseen, temporary, and uncontrollable circumstances. We will grant hazardous waste storage extensions on a case-by-case basis.
In order to apply for a storage extension, generators must submit a request which includes, at a minimum, the following information:
- Generator name.
- Facility address.
- Mailing address.
- Facility EPA ID number(s).
- Facility generator status.
- Hazardous waste information including:
- Waste codes.
- Waste description.
- Quantity (in Gallons, Lbs., or Cubic Yards).
- How the waste is stored (e.g., containers, tanks).
- Accumulation start date.
- Reason for extension request.
- Additional protective practices implemented to ensure safe management of increased volumes of hazardous waste stored on-site.
The division will also require any generator to submit a copy of all manifests for each hazardous waste granted a storage extension as soon as the waste is shipped off-site to a permitted treatment storage or disposal facility.
